Two:Months:Old

Baby Boy,

It’s been two amazing months so far and we are SO in love with you!  You’ve already changed so much.  It’s so fun, watching you grow up!

You have doubled your birth weight this month.  You are long and chunky now!  Chubby little rolls have popped up on your legs.  They are my favorite!

When people meet you, the first thing they comment about is all of your hair.  It’s really thick for a baby and makes you look so grown up!  It’s such cool hair that we can never bear to put a hat on you.  They just look so weird, after all – we’ve never seen you without hair!

You love to get your diaper changed because it means you get to be at least half naked – which is your favorite way to be though you rarely are allowed, since that almost certainly means someone or thing will be sprayed with urine (which I hadn’t thought of, could actually be a part of the attraction to being naked, huh?  Uh-huh – I’m onto you and your little plan!)

This month you found your hands.  Your fists end up in your mouth pretty regularly and so do blankets, that you grab and pull into your mouth all by yourself.  I think it’s pretty impressive.

It is our all day long goal to make you smile, which you have started doing in reaction to things.  Your smile is amazing – my favorite one is the mouth wide open, eyes squeezed shut one that resembles an anime character.  :)

It is also our all day long goal, not to get spit up everywhere, but that rarely happens because spit up is your vice this month.  Last month, we battled upset tummies which often broke my heart because you were in pain and I couldn’t always help you.  Spit up is better in comparison in that it doesn’t hurt you, but it is a constant hassle that means lots of changes of clothes, & more baths.  But we deal.

I’m learning more and more about you each day – mostly what your different cries mean and what different things we can do to make you happy & comfortable.

You are so alert and seem pretty laid back, like you’re just observing and taking everything in.  It’s so much fun watching your personality develop.  I bet we’ll get an even better sense of who you are this next month.  We can’t wait!

We love you, little Munchkin!!

XOXO

Pompeii

“Mount Vesuvius, a volcano near the Bay of Naples in Italy, is hundreds of thousands of years old and has erupted more than 50 times. Its most famous eruption took place in the year 79 A.D., when the volcano buried the ancient Roman city of Pompeii under a thick carpet of volcanic ash. The dust “poured across the land” like a flood, one witness wrote, and shrouded the city in “a darkness…like the black of closed and unlighted rooms.” Two thousand people died, and the city was abandoned for almost as many years.

When a group of explorers rediscovered the site in 1748, they were surprised to find that–underneath a thick layer of dust and debris–Pompeii was mostly intact. The buildings, artifacts and skeletons left behind in the buried city have taught us a great deal about everyday life in the ancient world.”

These photos are some from our trip to Italy last April.  Pompeii has been a site that I’ve wanted to visit for such a long time.  We were very exited to see it, however our tour did not include a visit to the museum where all the artifacts and skeletons from the site are displayed.  We were kind of bummed about that.  If you go, definitely make sure you include the museum in your trip.  The tour of Pompeii was extremely long (the place is HUGE) and we got a little bored part way through but it was definitely an experience I will never forget.

Here are a few of Naples, just a short drive down from Pompeii.

Cooper’s Birth Story Pt. 1 {The Backstory}

Back in September, I wrote a pretty long blog post about how frustrated I was about my failed attempts to find a midwife or OB who would be as serious about my natural birth plan as I was.  Amazingly enough, we ended up with the perfect midwife (who was actually from the office I had been going to the whole time!)  She was very encouraging about us having a natural birth & had witnessed many successful ones in the past- even a few that had used Hypnobirthing techniques.  She did a great job – we absolutely loved her!

I also mentioned in that long sad blog post that there were no birthing centers near us and no Bradley Method or Hypnobabies birth classes going on around us.  I concluded that we live in a natural birthing dry spot and decided to just take the Hypnobabies home study.  I’m not very academically disciplined & neither is Brad, but I was determined that we were going to learn as much as we could.  There are only 5 class sessions in the book but the class is largely comprised of tracks that you listen to on a daily basis.  One of my favorites was the Daily Pregnancy affirmations.  If nothing else, that track (that you’re instructed to listen to every day) helped me reach Cooper’s birthing day with confidence that I was strong enough to have a natural birth and to do it in comfort and without fear.

It’s amazing what thoughts we let into our minds – especially surrounding giving birth.  You rarely hear of an easy or happy birth story.  Women, for some reason, love to tell (and even exaggerate) their horror stories – especially to other women who are pregnant.  One of the ideas behind hypnobabies is that you protect yourself from those thoughts (and outside influences) that lead to fear which causes you to tense up and fight the birth process which leads to pain which in turn can lead to possible complications at birth.  The whole concept is so great that you can actually apply it to many things in life.  All that being said, I highly recommend the Hypnobabies course.  I will admit that parts of the course seem pretty weird at first.  It took Brad quite a while to get on board because of this and though he supported me, he didn’t fully believe in much of the philosophy of it until I started having contractions and he saw it working.

I wanted to share our story mainly as an encouragement for those women who are hoping to have a natural birth but are scared or think they won’t be able to do it.  I am not an especially strong or disciplined person, but I don’t believe it takes a specific kind of person to have a baby naturally.  Women in primitive (and some not so primitive) cultures pop babies out naturally everyday.  For them it’s no big deal.  One story I hung onto during my pregnancy was of a doctor traveling through Africa who witnessed  his first African birth.  He was shocked at how the mother was able to deliver her baby (with seemingly no pain), strap it on her back and then go back to working in her garden*.

I believe that a woman’s body is amazing and was purposefully created to deliver a baby in the most perfect way.

Of course, there are many births that cannot be done naturally or completely without meds because of one thing or another and I know that mine could very well have happened in a different way.  I think it’s very important to be open to that possibility.  We had a section in our birth plan with our requests in the case of an emergency c-section.

Cooper’s birth story is, in my opinion, pretty much a perfect natural birth story.  We had no complications whatsoever and I attribute that to God blessing this day and everything about it in that way.  I also attribute it to the prayers that Brad and I, our friends, and family had been sending His way since we found out we were pregnant (and wanted to have a natural, non-medicated birth).  Lastly, I attribute it to Brad and I being as prepared as possible.

I am so excited to tell the story of one of the best days of my life in part two of Cooper’s Birth Story!

*I read this story in the book Hypnobabies (which I highly recommend!)

friday plans.

Today I am up super UN-early but I’m pretending it’s the break of dawn and I’m getting a head start on my day.  The coffee is brewing, I’m making a To-Do list & gearing up for a short but intensive To-Do-ing.  I’m going to turn the bathroom back into a potty sanctuary instead of a look-alike to the restroom outside the nearby gas station.  After that, it will probably be time to get ready for date night.  I have big ambitions for this day, people!  Wish me luck!

PS – Who taught this baby Kung Fu?

Forget plans, I just want to squeeze those chubby little legs and kiss that face all day long!
